History
The dairy began in 1907 after Emmanuel Missionary College (EMC), the fore-runner of Andrews Unviversity, was moved to Berrien Springs from Battle Creek, Michigan in 1901. The site for EMC was selected with an agriculture-horticulture education program in mind.
Students, faculty and staff worked side by side in the gardents and orhards planting, cultivating and harvesting the fruits and vegetables that would be preserved by the cafeteria and served at meals during the school year. At this time the dairy cows were milked by hand. All the feed was harvested using horse-drawn implements and plenty of student labor.
When electricity was installed at the dairy, machine milking was made possible and more cows were added to the herd. A milk processing plant was built. The dairy provided all the milk for the student body and for the local milk route delivered by horse-drawn cart. The cows were housed and milked near the present Agriculture building.
In 1966 the dairy was move to its present location and the milk processing plant was closed. In 1998 a master plan for renovation was developed and the next year construction began. Currently, three barns house the milking herd, the dry cows and the maternity cows. The calves are housed in two greenhouse type barns.
